Update on Marie - Oct. 21

Filed under: Updates on Marie — by amyhampton @ 3:11 pm

Hi Friends:

Sorry we have been so slow updating you on Marie’s progress. First, we have been in Iowa for a couple of weeks. Secondly,we have been waiting for “new” news and don’t have any, really.  She still has not had the cognitive test they were going to give her last week.  She did have her vision checked and was assured it is 20/20 but she is still complaining about “fuzziness” so we are hoping that improves as her brain heals further.

We did meet with some of the staff again, and the psychologist continues to believe Marie cannot live alone yet.  Since she no longer qualifies for staying at QLI we are trying to decide what next step is best for her.  The psychologist continues to be concerned about Marie’s unpredictability and impulsiveness.

We do hear Marie say “i was overwhelmed”…by things like going to Barnes and Noble, The Zoo , the Pumpkin Patch etc.  We liken it to when someone gets a hearing aid and all the sounds are amplified at the same level…we think her brain is having trouble sorting out background from the “task” at hand.  If you sit and talk with her for short periods, you are not apt to pick up on these subtleties. Physically she is gaining strength, although still a bit “wobbly” .  Her right hand is not back to normal, but our biggest concern is her emotional health.

She is beginning to read through all the hundreds of e-mail messages, and is so touched that so many of you have written. I think she has even answered a few of them.

She also feels blessed that you continue to keep her in your prayers…it means a lot to all of us; and please add a general prayer for all the residents here at QLI and the people who love them.  There are a few moms who rent houses or apartments and attend to their children daily. They are inspiring.

Thanks again for your thoughts, prayers and caring.  We’ll keep you posted on the next step when we know what it is.  She will not be at QLI much longer.

  1. We continue to keep you and Marie in our prayers, as we watch and wonder what new chapter God has in store for her. I hope you are able to find accomodations for Marie that meet her needs and give her opportunity to continue therapy and recovery. I understand that when goals are met, people no longer qualify for certain services or situations. My Aunt is in Madonna recovering from a stroke; so we are faced with similar challenges. Recovered enough to not need to be there, but not well enough to be on her own. We are looking at an assisted living type residence for a few months as she continues to recover and strengthen. Perhaps something like that is in store for Marie. Rest assured that you all continue to be in our prayers, and in the prayers of many others. We are here for you any way we can be. Randy & the kids.

  2. Dear Jeanne and Dick -

Craig Munier and I rode with Marie in RAGBRAI 2005. She was a lot of fun and we think the world of her. We have been talking about visiting Marie but wanted to ask the family if it would be ok at this time. Also, to confirm where she is.

    Please give us your guidance.

  3. Hi Marie, Jeanne, and Dick,

I just know you all are going to be like one of those Lifetime inspirational movies where your comeback will be so inspiring that your life and the lives around you will be enriched beyond measure. Keep the faith and take one day at a time. You have alot of people routing for you!

  4. First, the news on the improvements in Marie’s health are great news. We “check” on her progress regularly. We think of her, and pray for her often. Marie’s continued progress is great news. Second, we really appreciate the efforts of everyone involved in setting up and posting the information on the website - thanks to you we can follow Marie’s healing. Best wishes to Marie, her family, and best wishes to all the Torch folks.

  5. Marie,

You continue to be in my prayers. Part of Team Froggy will be together when Dad (father of Heather, Paul Matson and Paul Craig) gets married on November 18. He’s 83 years old…and as happy as a teenager. We always think of you when we get together, so you will be there in spirit with us.

    Continue healing!

    Love,
    Heather Craig-Oldsen
